A recent announcement has surprised many Americans hoping to travel to Europe in the near future.

As of 2024, all U.S. passport holders, regardless of their age, will need to apply online and pay a minor fee to enter Europe.

Americans currently have free, visa-less access to 184 destinations worldwide, making it the eighth most powerful passport in the world, with Singapore, Germany, Italy and Spain taking the top positions.

The new regulation — called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) — will also affect visitors from Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It will also be relatively quick and painless for most — the online application is brief, and a decision is sent via email. Those filling out the application will need to add basic biographical information, their travel plans, travel history and other security questions. The whole process should take no longer than 96 hours, and will cost €7 (about $8).

Once approved, the visa will be valid for multiple entries and for three years, or until passport expiration.
