While Europe has largely lifted all Covid-19-related requirements for international travelers for some months, the United States has kept restrictions, including pre-departure testing.
Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the testing requirement will end, but will continue to monitor the pandemic and reassess the need for testing if the situation changes.
“This step is possible because of the progress we’ve made in our fight against COVID-19,” said U.S. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra.
This comes after airline and tourism entities have been putting pressure on the Biden administration to get rid of the testing requirement, which demanded passengers provide a negative test taken no earlier than one day before travel, as it discouraged people booking international trips.
Domestic travel within the United States has largely returned to pre-pandemic levels, but international travel remains 24% below 2019 levels. The new ruling should hopefully see an uptick.
